Usage Guidelines

While most of our customers have some experience with applying these pigments, we understand that everyone has to start somewhere. If this is your first time, we've put together some basic guidelines to help you achieve the best results.

Applying luminous paint to a watch dial and hands requires precision and careful handling for an even, long-lasting finish. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

How to Apply Luminous Paint to Watch Dials and Hands

Preparation

Gather Your Tools

To ensure a smooth and precise application, prepare the following:

  • Fine-tipped brushes – For detailed application
  • Steady work surface – Prevents unwanted movement
  • Loupe or magnifying glass – Enhances visibility
  • Tweezers – For handling small components
  • Gloves – Prevents oils from affecting paint adhesion
  • Protective eyewear – Shields eyes from fine particles

Create a Dust-Free Workspace

Dust can easily settle on wet paint, so work in a clean and stable area to ensure a flawless finish.

Wear Gloves

Avoid transferring skin oils to the dial and hands, as these can interfere with the paint's adhesion.

Disassembling the Watch

Remove the Dial and Hands

Carefully detach the dial and hands from the movement using:

  • Tweezers or a hand-removal tool to prevent bending or damage

Mixing the Luminous Paint

Combine Pigment and Solvent

  • Mix luminous pigment with a compatible solvent
  • Aim for a paste-like consistency – too much solvent can make the paint too thin

Test for Proper Consistency

Before applying, test on a spare metal or plastic piece to ensure the paint is smooth and not too runny.

Applying Luminous Paint

On Dial Markers

  • Use a fine brush or toothpick to apply a small, even amount to each marker
  • Work slowly to maintain precision

On Watch Hands

  • Apply a thin, even coat
  • Ensure the paint stays within the intended area

Multiple Coats (Optional)

For a brighter glow, apply two to three thin coats, letting each layer dry completely before adding the next.

Drying and Curing

Let the Paint Dry Fully

Luminous paint requires several hours to dry and cure properly.

Avoid Handling During Curing

Touching the components too soon can cause smudging or uneven finish. Keep them in a stable, dust-free environment.

Reassembly

Carefully Reinstall the Dial and Hands

Once fully cured, reassemble the watch with care to avoid:

  • Scratching the painted areas
  • Damaging the hands or dial

Applying luminous paint can be challenging due to its delicate and detailed nature, so take your time to achieve an even finish.
